HARVEY YOUNG, 1899, O/B, SAN LUIS PARK, BLANCA PEAK, COLORADO. Signed and dated “Harvey Young” l.r., Image 28.50” x 39.25”, Overall 36” x 46.5”. Harvey Otis Young (1840-1901) was born in Lyndon, VT and became one of Colorado’s leading 19th C. artists, known for his Rocky Mountain landscapes and mining scenes. He himself was attracted to mining, first for gold in California, and later for silver in Colorado. After earning and losing a fortune due to the Panic of 1893, he returned to painting, focusing on scenes along the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. This scene of cows grazing in the San Luis Valley contains two prominent 14,000-foot mountains - Blanca Peak (left) Mt. Lindsey (right) - in the background. Blanca Peak is the highest mountain in the Sangre de Cristo range and is recognized for its stark relief and prominent position as an end-cap. Painting depicts oxen pulled hay wagon crossing the Saco River in Maine with onlooking family in canoe with radiant landscape overlooking. SILAS RICE CONNECTICUT CHIPPENDALE SECRETARY, CA. 1795-1805: This Silas Rice cherry three section desk and bookcase which retains most of its old brass and old, likely original, crusty finish has found it’s way back to us. ‘The pediment with carved pinwheel rosette, and an inverted shell below the waisted center plinth. A pierced chain necklace of circular cutouts is complemented by fylfots. Both bookcase and desk are embellished with crisply turned fluted quarter columns. Drawer fronts are lipped. Feet have flattened balls grasped by well carved claws with long and tapered talons.
