Oil on canvas, "View of the Hudson", by Jasper F. Cropsey, signed lower left J.F. Cropsey, 1886, 14.25" x 26". Prov. Monks/Melvin family, N.Y., received directly from the artist. Per family: My step father (William O. Melvin), called this morning, he said…that Cropsey came up from NYC by stage coach. He most likely stopped at the Jug Tavern. On the day of the painting, Cropsey walked down the hill to the painting site. The area was originally called Sparta, NY and not Ossining, NY. Bills, mother's family construction company was called John L. Monks & Sons Construction Company, according to him it was a well-established, large construction company, in its day. The home they constructed for Cropsey he thinks was in Warwick, NY., in return they received this painting, I think, I mention that Bills family is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery ( off of route 9). Cropsey’s plot is adjacent to the Monks/Melvin’s plot. In 2014 this painting was sold to an art dealer in NYC by a family member without conversing with the other members, Mr. Melvin after hearing of this went to the dealer and purchased it back. On top of this he purchased an antique frame for $18,000. See receipts
