EMIL BISTTRAM, 1972, PASTEL, “SUNSET ON THE DESERT”.Titled, signed , and dated “Sunset on the Desert / Emil J Bisttram TAOS 72” in lower margin. Sight 15" x 19", frame 21 1/4” x 24 3/4”. Born in Hungary, Emil Bisttram became a prominent painter in the Southwest, who founded the Transcendental Art movement in New Mexico. Sunset on the Desert exemplifies the mission of this artistic style to stimulate other sensations through visual form and color. The white sun and jasper-yellow sky over the burnt orange bluffs and varying purple hues in the foreground and distance evokes the feeling of dry air both hot and cold as well as the buzzing sounds associated with the American southwest desert. Condition: Not examined out of frame, examined under UV and LED lights. The reverse with Owings-Dewey Fine Art and Alterman Galleries, Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM labels, this pastel is in overall very good condition with no issues detected.
